Thank you so much for the Facebook likes and kinds words of encouragement during the January 23rd Delta Sigma Theta Shark Tank event.
As you many of you know on that brisk January morning, the Octavia's Natural Hair Care Experience team was away from their normal environment working on securing financial support for the purpose of spreading the salon's Green and Natural Movement message and promoting natural hair care.
Today, I want to share my Delta Sigma Theta Shark Tank update with you....
We nervously observed the audience grow bigger and bigger as the 10am start time came closer. Next, the event was called to order with a inspirational prayer. After the blessing, each Shark Thank panelist, along with their jaw dropping bios, were introduced to the audience. After the introductions, it was time for the major attraction..SHARK TANK!
First and Foremost, I was called on stage first. (OMG, I didn't expect that!) And although my powerpointmalfunctioned, I kept the conversation moving forward; that is, sharing my story and vision with the Sharks and the audience. For me, the story is personal; however for the Sharks, the conversation is about dollars and practical business sense.
During the many questions from the seasoned Sharks, I tried to keep a cool and confident demeanor. But between you and me, I was sweating bullets.
What's the good part?
Well, the Savvy Sharks believed that the Octavia' Natural Hair Care Experience business model was good but slightly over ambitious. The Sharks warned me about pursuing a gas station and mentioned that the business may even outgrow the location. Also, the Sharks further recommended us to really think about scaling up my soap and oil products (but in a manner that makes the most business sense!) The most exciting news: the Sharks felt I could really have a "more" profitable business. Yet, they cautioned that it has to be done right; the strongest recommendation....search out a location that has an anchor store. And after all those hard questions, my talk ended. Or should I say, the timekeeper ended my question and answering session because the Sharks kept asking me questions; so many inquiries that my talk went over the planned time.
So what happened?
I didn't get a business deal on the spot. However, I have two great next steps. After the event, the Sharks said, "I get where you are, and I want to help!" In addition, I rallied a few new supporters and maybe even a client or two!! Next stop, Miami; I am a contestant in another Shark Tank event called, PowerMoves Miami. Wish me luck because I need to practice, practice, practice, craft a master pitch and GO FOR A MAJOR FINANCIAL ASK. By the way, if you have any good Shark Tank tips, please leave a comment. And by all means, please show support by liking this post and sharing with your network.
